Freevo
Free alternative to Microsoft's Media Center, its a PVR (personal video recorder) also sometimes called a DVR (digital video recorder). Freevo is an open-source home theatre PC platform based on Linux and a number of open-source audio/video tools. MPlayer and/or Xine can be used to play audio and video files in most popular formats. Freevo can be used both for a standalone PVR computer with a TV+remote, as well as on a regular desktop computer using the monitor and keyboard. They say theoretically it should be possible to get it to run on Windows, but I'm sure it would require a lot of setting up and configuring.
MythTV
Yet another popular PVR. Theres also a offshoot of this called KnoppMyth, but I dont know much about it.
